Apocalyptica / Swallow The Sun - Glasgow ABC
December 8th, 2008Swallow The Sun have a great sound through the PA from the offset, and their melodically rich and melancholically sublime compositions fills the air with an epic splendour.
Aleksi Munter’s keyboards accompany the guitars of Juha Raivio and Markus Jämsen to create enchanting soundscapes, while vocalist Mikko Kotamäki has a voice apt for the music, alternating between a passionately growled delivery and melancholically captivating clean vocals.
For me tonight was mainly about Swallow The Sun and getting the chance to meet the band after the gig was a great experience. What drew in the crowds tonight, however, were the headline act, Apocalyptica.
Four celli and drums, it doesn’t need much to make a great show!
There was nothing else on stage besides four huge chairs and a drum kit. The backs of the chairs were shaped like caskets with cut out skulls, which looked great with the fantastic light show.
Playing a mixture of their own songs from the new album “World’s Collide” and covers of Metallica and Sepultura their highlights were Metallica’s “One” and their own “Bittersweet”. The sounds from the four chelloists ranged from classical harmonies to what sounded like death metal vocals. These guys are really talented and put on an entertaining show.
